Treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Anyone who has been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is interested in what can be done to cure it. Unfortunately, the answer at this point in time is nothing. There is no cure for this condition, but there are a lot of different types of treatment which can be used to reduce the symptoms and give the person suffering with the disease back some semblance of normal life. Treatments for CFS are geared towards providing pain relief for the patient and increasing his or her ability to function. Most experts will tell you that you will receive the best results by using both drug and non-drug therapies.

Not every patient will respond to every type of treatment. Even if your friend had good luck using a particular type of therapy, that's no assurance that your body will respond in the same way. Don't get discouraged if something doesn't work for you, because there will always be something else your doctor or therapist can try. Keep in mind that exercise which is too strenuous, even if you're doing it for therapeutic reasons, can make the symptoms of CFS worse. Therefore, it is recommended that patients get moderate exercise with plenty of rest in between for optimum results.

There will be lifestyle changes your doctor will recommend that you make in order to reduce the effects of CFS. You will need to eat a healthy diet, reduce the stress in your life, and learn techniques for stretching your muscles without overtaxing your body.

One major problem with CFS is that many doctors are reluctant to diagnose it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have estimated that less than one in five Americans who suffer from the condition have actually been diagnosed. Studies have also found that the longer patients wait to start treatment, the more severe the condition will become. People who start treatment within two years of the onset of CFS are quite likely to show improvement, whereas patients who haven't been diagnosed until later on suffer more complications and exhibit less response to therapeutic procedures.

Many studies have been conducted that explore the benefits of natural treatments for CFS. Some of the findings have been:

1.Ginseng, which has long been used in Oriental herbal treatments, has been found to be effective in decreasing the symptoms of CFS as per a study conducted by the University of Iowa.  Californian researchers have concurred, but a study done in Siberia found Ginseng to be as ineffective as a placebo.

2.L-carnitine, which is found in almost all of the cells in the body, has been found to be low in people suffering from CFS. A group of people was introduced to daily supplements of L-carnitine, and within 4 weeks of the onset of treatment the majority showed improvement.

3.Coenzyme Q10 is a substance that is found naturally in the energy-producing cells of our bodies. A study was conducted in which people took Q10 supplements with a success rate of 69%.

Most of the studies on treatments for CFS have only been conducted on a small scale, and none of them have been clinically-approved for patient use. However, if you're suffering from this condition, you might be willing to give any safe treatment yo can find a try.
