Getting Relief From The Pain Of Fibromyalgia

Although fibromyalgia can manifest itself in many different ways, one thing that most patients have in common is pain. No one really knows what causes this disease or if it's really a disease at all. What many medical professionals believe is that stress and various inherited traits make certain people more susceptible to the condition than others. People with a history of trauma or violence, physical injuries, or viral infections are more likely to suffer from it than the rest of the general population. Although not all patients will exhibit the symptoms, the majority are seeking the best methods of pain relief.

There is a large collection of symptoms that can be caused by fibromyalgia. Some of the most common are widespread pain throughout the body, joint pain, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, heightened sensitivity, nerve pain, hypoglycemia, and skin disorders. There are a variety of different stimuli that can cause the condition to flare up which include weather changes, illnesses that aren't related to it, and too much of the wrong kinds of exercise. A strange thing about this condition is that there is no inflammation. We usually associate general body pain with inflammations of the muscles and joints, but there are nothing that doctors can find diagnostically that shows any signs of this being the case.

The lifestyle of a fibromyalgia patient plays a big part in the relief of the pain associated with the condition. Sufferers need to follow healthy dietary guidelines while avoiding anything containing animal fats. Fresh fruits and vegetables as well as whole grains should predominate.  In addition to diet, patients should also get low-impact aerobic exercise every other morning.  Walking and swimming are two excellent exercises that keep the impact off of sore joints and muscles. Pursuing other types of exercise may incur so much pain that the individual will stop exercising altogether which isn't going to ease their pain.

Fibromyalgia patients can often get relief from minor pain by using acetaminophen. Anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Ibuprofen, aren't as effective because of the fact that the condition does not involve any inflammation of muscles and joints. The ointment Capsaicin, which has been effective in treating other conditions, may offer some relief from pain, because some patients have reported that their pain lessened while using it. Doctors often recommend narcotics (opiates) for patients with moderate to serious pain who can get no relief from simpler medications. If you don't like using narcotics, your doctor might be willing to put you on Tramodol, a non-narcotic drug which has helped some patients.

If all other treatments fail, your doctor can give you injections of lidocaine straight into your bloodstream.  This is a last-ditch effort and is still being tested, but patients who are in this much pain will obviously try any means to lessen its effect. There are still a lot of mysteries surrounding fibromyalgia and  a lot of information that doctors are still lacking in its treatment, but medical science is making progress towards a cure and better ways of controlling the pain every day.
